Chapter Twenty-One

Day nine found Gray and me back at the Wraith Lord Citadel for a two-day break, and I was excited to see my lovers. And maybe one other man.

Gray and I stepped out of the arrival chamber to find Taroc talking to General Ranor just outside the dining hall. I stopped walking, leaving Gray to go forward a few steps without me. He looked back when he realized I wasn't with him, then followed my stare to Taroc. With a grin and a snort, Gray headed into the dining hall.

“I'm too hungry to wait for you to gawk at a guy,” Gray called back loudly.

I cursed under my breath when Ranor and Taroc immediately turned my way. Taroc's stare met mine and a jolt of something hot went down my spine. Fuck. I'd been hiding my love for him under anger, but that didn't diminish it. In fact, it had been secretly growing. Yearning. Reaching for the sun. And who was the sun? He was right there. But he wasn't shining.

Taroc glowered at Gray as he sauntered by, then back at me. He said something to Ranor, then strode into the dining hall.

“Fuck,” I muttered.

“Ember,” General Ranor approached me. “How is it going out there?”

“Good, General,” I said. “Graysen is doing most of the work. He's amazing at it. I just sit there and smile.”

Ranor looked over his shoulder, but he was watching Taroc, not Gray. “Ah. Yes, that's good.”

“Is something wrong, Sir?”

“No. Taroc's team is doing well too. He reported that they've enlisted several volunteers at both of the villages they've visited. It's a good start.”

“Have you seen the rest of my, uh, team yet?”

“Not yet. I'm sure they'll be here soon.” He smacked my shoulder. “Go and get something to eat. Is it breakfast time for you?”

“Yes, General. We haven't gone that far from the citadel yet.”

“Excellent. I believe it's dinnertime for Taroc.”

“Oh. Right. Xae Gant.” I looked toward the dining hall.

Ranor leaned in and said gently, “Maybe you should talk to him.”

I was surprised by the suggestion, enough that I squared my shoulders and headed into the hall. “I'll try.”

Graysen was already eating at my usual table with Jack, Taroc's recruiter. Taroc, however, was still at the buffet. I hurried over, grabbed a plate, and slapped some food on it on my way to him.

“Hey,” I said.

He grunted.

“Can we talk?” I asked.

Taroc looked at me. Searched my eyes for several long moments. Then he shook his head and went back to filling his plate.

“What the fuck?” I growled. “You're not even going to talk to me?”

He shook his head.

“Son of a bitch,” I muttered as he moved down the buffet line.

My anger returned with a vengeance. And I mean that literally. I wanted vengeance. I nearly upended my plate over Taroc's head. Two things held me back. One, the room was full of people, including a lot of humans. And two, I didn't think I could stretch my arm high enough to get the plate over Taroc's head.
